TOP 10 Questions About Car Rental

Payless — a сar rental brand operating in Ukraine according to international standards, with a new fleet and convenient conditions for clients

1. What is the cost of renting a car?

The price depends on the car group you choose. Payless offers 9 different groups. Each group includes vehicles with similar characteristics: compact city cars, crossovers, minivans, pickups, etc. The cost is determined by the class, brand, and transmission type of the vehicle you select.

Low rental prices can be misleading. It’s better to choose transparent pricing and understand how the cost is formed. For long-term rentals, the daily rate usually decreases (the longer the rental, the cheaper the daily rate). There’s also a Weekend Rate available, offering more favorable pricing from Friday morning to Monday evening.

You can get a good rental deal from a company that clearly explains how the price is structured.

The price usually includes:

  • Value-added tax (VAT)
  • A certain mileage limit per day (e.g., 150 km) or unlimited mileage
  • Mandatory third-party liability insurance
  • Other standard services (maintenance, road assistance, etc.)

Possible additional charges:

  • Exceeding the mileage limit (if one applies) — paid per extra kilometer
  • Full coverage with zero liability (which reduces your risks) — available for an extra fee
  • Fines for parking or other violations
  • Optional services like: second driver, young driver, or child seat rental

2. What Documents Are Required to Rent a Car?

To rent a car in Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lviv, or Odesa through Payless, you will need:

  • A passport
  • A valid driver’s license
  • A personal bank card with the ability to block a deposit and pay for the rental

3. What Is the Minimum Age and Driving Experience Required?

  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Minimum driving experience: 2 years

If the driver does not meet the age or experience requirement, the car may still be rented under the "young driver" option, which includes an additional fee to cover the rental company’s increased risk.

4. Is a Deposit Required?

Yes, a deposit is required. This is an amount that is “frozen” on your card until the vehicle is returned.
The deposit amount varies depending on the class of the car — approximately the equivalent of $300 to $1200 USD in local currency.

Once the car is returned, the deposit is unfrozen.
The exact timing depends on your bank, but Payless does everything possible to speed up the process.

5. How Can I Reduce the Deposit or Limit My Liability?

You can purchase additional insurance. The “Medium” package cuts your liability in case of damage or theft in half — and also reduces the deposit by 50%. The “Super” package offers zero liability (including glass damage). In this case, the deposit is reduced to a minimum amount (from $150 USD equivalent), depending on the car category.

6. What Insurance Is Included and What Does It Cover?

Mandatory third-party liability insurance is included in the rental price. Additional insurance packages like “Medium” or “Super” cover damage, possible theft, glass, and other small elements. If you choose full coverage with zero liability, your responsibility is minimal or entirely eliminated.

7. Can I Travel Abroad with the Car?

Yes, Payless allows travel abroad. You’ll need to arrange additional documents for crossing the border, such as: a power of attorney, international insurance (Green Card), and travel permits.

9. What Are the Car Return Conditions?

You must return the car to the rental location or another agreed-upon spot, and under the same conditions as at pickup: clean interior, full fuel tank. If the fuel tank is not full, an additional refueling charge may apply. If the interior is dirty or has been smoked in, an additional cleaning fee may be charged. For example, smoking in the car will result in a $50 USD equivalent cleaning fee to remove the odor.

10. What Should I Do in Case of an Accident?

You’re not alone — Payless is available 24/7. If an incident occurs:

  • Stop immediately, turn on hazard lights, and place a warning triangle on a distance of:

 - at least 20 meters away in the city,

 - 40 meters outside the city.

  • Check for injuries. If anyone is hurt, call an ambulance (103) right away. Provide first aid if possible.
  • Call the police (102). Even if the damage is minor, you must file an official police report.
Without it, insurance may not cover the damages.
